I didn't mark the pump before taking it apart but I did go thru the valve train, #1TDC w/ dial caliper, dots on pump gear lined up w/ idler gear, fuel pump lines lined up etc & everything looks correct but I had to retard the pump from where the directions said to set it to get it to fire once but it wont restart easily. My question is, is that it wouldn't have started if I was off by even 1 tooth on the gears correct? If so then I can eliminate that as a potential problem? I'm asking do I now have to play w/ the pumps timing to get it to fire correctly by trial & error? If 2 or 4 degrees makes a difference & the width of the timing line on the pump is equal to 2 degrees then it looks hopeless to adjust the pump timing right on. How do the profesionals set the pump if they dont have marks before they take it apart? Thanks for any help Jim
