Non-detergent motor oils.

Following is an inquiry I sent to "Ask Texaco", or some such (), and their (abridged) reply:Collectors occasionally encounter older cars, trucks, tractors, etc., in which non-detergent motor oils have always been used, and which still carry same in their crankcases. As you might expect, many of these engines are pretty well sludged up--in the crankcase and oil galleries. Questions: Should one (1) Continue using non-detergent for fear of disturbing the sludge (and perhaps clogging oil lines)? (2)Don't worry, the oil filter will remove the sludge as detergent oil brings it up. (3) Tear the engine down and clean it up. (4) Change to detergent oil and don't worry about the existing sludge, just try to prevent any more from forming. Please comment. Answer from Texaco: "...We do not recommend switching from a nondetergent to a detergent motor oil if the nondetergent has been in service for some time. You touched upon the reasons behind this briefly in you inquiry. If you want to switch to a nondetergent [sic, I'm sure he meant 'detergent'], we do recommend you break the engine apart and thoroughly clean it out. That is the only way you will be able to adequately clean out the varnish and sludge build up. Otherwise, more problems will be created that resolved. If you any other questions, please let us know. WE APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS!"
