The oil runs through the filter before it goes to the crank, etc. The trick is to make sure to change the filter often. Also, flush the engine crankcase with diesel fuel before you change to the detergent oil. You also, should take off the valve cover, and use a brush and diesel fuel to clean up that area. The valve cover and crankcase is where most of the sludge will be. Also, Lubriplate sells an oil based solvent that when added to your engine oil, will clean up the engine very quickly.
