The TEXACO guys have a valid point as far as liabilty goes. If they had advised the switch to regular detergent oil, someone could have held them liable for any engine damage, imagined or not. So either bite the bullet and clean the old clunker out, switch to detergent oil and change filters often, or just stay with the inferior brands of non-detergent oils. I'd personally recommend the latter and just change filters often due to the superior bearing protection offered by the modern SJ rated motor oils. Figure it can't be any worse than running inferior HD or SA/SB rated motor oils in an engine. The choice is yours. Regards Jeff King
