Need help with pick-up truck transfer case, no 4x4 anymore.

Today went to pull my flatdeck trailer out of the snow bank and found out teh truck has no 4x4. was on a raod trip this past weekend and every once and a whiel would hear a hummm from the transfer case going up hills. Im expecting the worst and the coast to be over the moon, we stil have 2 months of winter left, yuk. Has any one had this happen before??? its a ford f250 1986 truck with an auto overdrive tranny. what could be broken???? if the drive chain was split wouldn't it bind and stall the truck when put into 4x4???? there is just no front drive at all and no odd noises maybe some sorta internal clutch???? Any help or idea's would be greatly appreciated Thank you kindly.
