that grayish or whiteish scum you see usually around the oil fill cap is moisture that has not fully evaporated from the oil..this is because the engine is never hot enough to get rid of it..a thermostat would solve this problem but I think that there is so little moisture that accumulates it would have no detrimental effect to the engine even if ya don't use a thermostat.. I have a 8n now that has no stat and Im a bit leary about putting one in because of reports of pressure building up behind the stat and cracking the old cast block..I would get other opinions before making a judgement Dave
