I know you said you checked the +/- connections but maybe you should have someone else check you just to be sure. It is not clear in your post what the exact sequence of events was. Did the volt meter show charge or discharge when you got the tractor? There are alot of things that could have been done wrong here because of the conversion from 6 to 12 volts. There may have been a problem in the wiring when you got the tractor and when you replace the wiring you just copied the problem. If the alternator was tested ok I would trust the test. It is probably a reverse polarity somewhere. The Ford 900 doesn't have a positive ground does it? Put a voltmeter across the battery and see if it shows a discharge at high rpm. When you start the tractor and the battery is pulling the engine over your ampmeter should show a discharge, does it? If it shows charge instead you have a reverse connection through the meter.
