Above that serial number, the head gasket does not seal on the sleeve. The sleeve has a very small flange and it is not to be pressed in the block so far that the flange contacts the block. That will cause sleeve to crack. That is the reason they tell you to use the proper tool as it will press sleeve in proper depth. The flange will protrude maybe .025 over block but less than head gasket thickness. The height is not all that important. The important thing is that it is not pushed in too far. The older engines you had to maintain the sleeve flange height to a very close tolerence as the head gasket sealed on the flange of the sleeve. I liked to stay on the low end of spec on them but all must be within that .002 of each other. And the new engine sleeve is a heavy press sleeve where as the older serial number engine has a light push. On them I normally go with a .002 oversize sleeve, hone block to get a nice light press fit if possible.
