282 diesel cylinder sleeve protrusion

Received an I & T Manual today in order to determine engine specifications on a 656 diesel tractor that I am working on. One of the specifications I was most wanting to determine is the cylinder sleeve protrusion on my engine. The manual gives a .001 to .004 inch dimension for engine serials less than 71788 and a maximum allowance of .002" variance between cylinders. It does not however give dimensions for engines with serial numbers higher than 71788 but only that the height gauge tool bottoms out on the cylinder block. What are the dimensions for the cylinder protrusion above the block if one does not have that tool.
This tractor was bought not running from a tractor jockey and I discovered a blown head gasket between number 2 and 3 cylinders. Had the cylinder head checked by a professional mechanic that indicated the head was not warped. From what I observed in taking this engine apart this far is that someone had been inside this engine before. Thanks in advance for any specs you can share.

Above that serial number, the head gasket does not seal on the sleeve. The sleeve has a very small flange and it is not to be pressed in the block so far that the flange contacts the block. That will cause sleeve to crack. That is the reason they tell you to use the proper tool as it will press sleeve in proper depth. The flange will protrude maybe .025 over block but less than head gasket thickness. The height is not all that important. The important thing is that it is not pushed in too far. The older engines you had to maintain the sleeve flange height to a very close tolerence as the head gasket sealed on the flange of the sleeve. I liked to stay on the low end of spec on them but all must be within that .002 of each other. And the new engine sleeve is a heavy press sleeve where as the older serial number engine has a light push. On them I normally go with a .002 oversize sleeve, hone block to get a nice light press fit if possible.

As Pete indicated the actual protrusion is not critical on the later engines. The spec from the IH service manual is .035 - .045.

Thanks Pete and Owen for your responses. Brought the head along to the diesel program at our local vocational school today along with a valve overhaul kit. The IT manual indicates that valve stem seals were used on all valves but there weren"t any on the engine when I removed head and the kit I bought off of this website didn"t include any. How critical are they and should I visit my local NAPA store to purchase them?

They are (experienced opinion) important. Due to the machine work being done, putting Perfect Circle style Teflon ring seals in it is a great idea. Jim
