My dad and his neighbor were having trouble starting the Super C that has always started well but had been sitting for several months. They bought and installed a new coil (because they determined that the spark was very inconsistent) and cleaned up the points. They used a little starting fluid in the air cleaner and it started up. In the #2 cylinder there was a banging sound that they described as possibly firing too early. My Dad said it sounded to him as though the noise wasn't every firing stroke but it could be hard to tell because of the low RPM. They double checked the plug wires on the distributor cap (but they were never removed in the first place). They checked the compresion and all cylinders were 150 psi. They tried a different spark plug wire, and tried switching the plug form cylinder #1. None of these things helped. When the spark plug wire from cylinder #2 was unplugged the engine smothed out and ran quite well on 3 cylinders and the noise stopped.
I am sorry that the post is long but I tried to give as much information as I can. My Dad's neighbor is really knowledgable and not stumped often, that makes me worry. I REALLY appreciate any ideas and help that y'all have. Thanks -- Martin
