John, You may not be able to find any visable casting codes if you have a 1939 or 1940 model A. If there are, they will be "I" for 1939, and "J" for 1940. You undoubtedly have one or the other as 39 and 40 were the years they used dzeus fasteners and mechanical kill switch. The stamped serial number is on a machined surface on the block below #1 spark plug. The throttle rod to the governor passes directly across that surface. While it is possible that your engine has been replaced, you can determine if it is (engine) a 39 or 40 if the serial number is consistant with either of those years. YOu may have to scrape the paint and crud off the machined surface to make out the serial number. If you have no place for a starter on the torque tube, that would also indicate a 1939 or early 1940 model, as the later 1940 models would have had a starter ready torque tube even if it was not equipped with a starter. Charging systems were optional on those tractors to run optional headlights. Most used a Bosch system with a direct connection to the headlighes with no battery, meaning it had lights only when the engine and generator were running. A battery wasn"t necessary because there was no need to store electricity for starting. If there was a engine casting code it would be below the magneto. I have a 1940 A of that configuration, but a replacement engine, so my engine casting date isnt a match to the tractor, but the date code is indeed on the block below the magneto. There may also be a date on the head on the same side.
