A cute little Farmall A followed us home this weekend, and we are trying to find her age. The serial tag is gone from under the seat. Is the number stamped on the engine anywhere? I think the tractor may be a 1939 or early '40 beacuse of these details: The mag has a cable-activated kill, not the electrical grounding switch like others. This is original because I found a support bracket for the cable under the tank, and it has a portion of the old cable still in it. The tractor does not have any charging/electrical items on it, and there is no ring gear on the flywheel, so I think it never had a starter or battery system. There is no evidence of a battery box ever being installed. No starter switch, wiring, charging box, wiring holders, generator brackets. Nothing. All of the casting marks have the round IHC emblem on them, not the block IH of later models. My 1942 M has the same round emblem all over her, so no real determination here. The hood and grill are fastened with the Dzus fasteners, used only on the early models. All are present and intact. She has no water pump, and no pulley for a generator. Unfortunately, I can not locate a single casting date code anywhere on any of the parts. I went over her pretty well, even pulled the valve cover, but found nothing. Where should these codes be located? I usually find them near the part numbers, but not on this little thing.
