A cute little Farmall A followed us home this weekend, and we are trying to find her age. The serial tag is gone from under the seat. Is the number stamped on the engine anywhere? I think the tractor may be a 1939 or early '40 beacuse of these details:

The mag has a cable-activated kill, not the electrical grounding switch like others. This is original because I found a support bracket for the cable under the tank, and it has a portion of the old cable still in it.

The tractor does not have any charging/electrical items on it, and there is no ring gear on the flywheel, so I think it never had a starter or battery system. There is no evidence of a battery box ever being installed. No starter switch, wiring, charging box, wiring holders, generator brackets. Nothing.

All of the casting marks have the round IHC emblem on them, not the block IH of later models. My 1942 M has the same round emblem all over her, so no real determination here.

The hood and grill are fastened with the Dzus fasteners, used only on the early models. All are present and intact.

She has no water pump, and no pulley for a generator.

Unfortunately, I can not locate a single casting date code anywhere on any of the parts. I went over her pretty well, even pulled the valve cover, but found nothing. Where should these codes be located? I usually find them near the part numbers, but not on this little thing.

The earliest As had the serial number plate on the shield below the front edge of the platform, just below the pedals. A little later it was moved to the seat support.

John, You may not be able to find any visable casting codes if you have a 1939 or 1940 model A. If there are, they will be "I" for 1939, and "J" for 1940. You undoubtedly have one or the other as 39 and 40 were the years they used dzeus fasteners and mechanical kill switch. The stamped serial number is on a machined surface on the block below #1 spark plug. The throttle rod to the governor passes directly across that surface. While it is possible that your engine has been replaced, you can determine if it is (engine) a 39 or 40 if the serial number is consistant with either of those years. YOu may have to scrape the paint and crud off the machined surface to make out the serial number. If you have no place for a starter on the torque tube, that would also indicate a 1939 or early 1940 model, as the later 1940 models would have had a starter ready torque tube even if it was not equipped with a starter. Charging systems were optional on those tractors to run optional headlights. Most used a Bosch system with a direct connection to the headlighes with no battery, meaning it had lights only when the engine and generator were running. A battery wasn"t necessary because there was no need to store electricity for starting. If there was a engine casting code it would be below the magneto. I have a 1940 A of that configuration, but a replacement engine, so my engine casting date isnt a match to the tractor, but the date code is indeed on the block below the magneto. There may also be a date on the head on the same side.

The early ones had fewer casting dates, but check the right side of the block about in the middle. If the engine hasn't been changed out, the ser. number for the engine is stamped above number one spark plug on a milled flat boss. The serial numbers matched on the early ones, or were very close, so you should be able to determine the year, but it sounds like you have a 39 to 41

You say above the spark plug. This would put in on the cylinder head. Shouldn't it be on the block? The head could be changed a half dozen times between then and now.
