Best ya get a book for the set up , i don't know what you are callen excessive but ya have to have some back lash . And when changing pinion bearings ya have to make sure that you have the depth correct . And since you are going this far ya might as well change all the bearings if that thing was full of water you sure don't want to put a bull gear down thru the rear end or knock the bottom of the transmission case out like my accountant did on his S/MTA and this was about a week after it was all painted up ended up putting a 400 rear housing on it and all new bearings.
