Need help... My SMTA has a noise in the rear end. There appears to be an extreme amount in play in the ring gear pinion setting. How can I move the two closer together? Are there shims I can remove? Thanks Marv

Tractor Vet... Thanks for the reply. I've removed the deck and found excessive play between the ring gear and pinion. Based on your information, I'll check the front and rear pinion bearings next. Looks like this is going to turn into a major project. I'll have to split the tractor between the TA housing and rear end to replace the bearings. The previous owner did not change the rear end oil and most of what came out was water. Luckly, the TA works. Marv

Best ya get a book for the set up , i don't know what you are callen excessive but ya have to have some back lash . And when changing pinion bearings ya have to make sure that you have the depth correct . And since you are going this far ya might as well change all the bearings if that thing was full of water you sure don't want to put a bull gear down thru the rear end or knock the bottom of the transmission case out like my accountant did on his S/MTA and this was about a week after it was all painted up ended up putting a 400 rear housing on it and all new bearings.

Yes , do you have the deck off the tractor???? There are shims under the bull pinions housings . You may have other problems and it is best to look over eveything before you start moving shims . You may have a bearing or two going south . I just got done with one S/MTA that had a bull pinion bearing go out and found that the other three were on there way so if i am going to do one just might as well do the others . The guy that owens this one is starting to have bearing problems and we are going to have to go in and replace all of them sooner or later it started with and inside axel bearing back a couple years ago then the other side went a littel later now this next it will be the pinion and trans.
