It happens that way, generally. Pull the pan and then you can lift the gearup to get the axel through. Important!!! there sould be a washer--spacer-- in the bottom of the pan, get it out and feed the axel through it, the axel will go through the gear first and then the washer, then through the inner bearing to where the cap screw holds it together. I like to put some medium lock tite on the cap screw.
