HI again, I have a 140 that I took the right rear axle out of to replace the seal. It seems that the gear the axle goes into has dropped and now I can't get the axle through the back bearing. What am I doing wrong??

Thanks for your help!!!

Dean

Been there ,done that. Like already said, you'll have to get in there to lift the gear up a little and find the washer/spacer that dropped. I had the same experience on a b414.

It happens that way, generally. Pull the pan and then you can lift the gearup to get the axel through. Important!!! there sould be a washer--spacer-- in the bottom of the pan, get it out and feed the axel through it, the axel will go through the gear first and then the washer, then through the inner bearing to where the cap screw holds it together. I like to put some medium lock tite on the cap screw.

Oh boy - very timely!

I have a Super A with both Final Drive Wheel Seals leaking and have parts on order. Have only the diagram from IH Shop Manual IH-8 to go on.

And I was wondering what surprises I would discover, once I started in on the seals. You know the kind "Maybe I shudda left well enough alone, and just lived with the leaks..... ."

So thanx for the info; here's another soul spared some agony.....

When you pull the bull gear axle you'll have to take the small square plate off on the inside of the axle, then you'll see a bolt head, loosen it take it and thick washer out. Of course you'll have to remove the wheel and bearing cap on the outside. Then with someone on the outside helping, the axle will come out. If it is tight I use a brass drift on the inside to get it started. As it goes slide a rod "the drift if long enough" through from the inside to hold up the bull gear, then you should have no trouble when you go back with the axle. Of course you should likely change the oil anyway and that still requires dropping the pan, but at least you don't have to hold the parts up in there as you go back. One last thing make sure the tractor is supported securly.
