Hi Dale, there is supposed to be a spring that attaches to either the clutch foot pedal lever or the lever that goes into the torque tube. I forget exactlly where it connects but look for a hole drilled in either of those levers that would take about a 2" extension coil spring with hook on each end. The other end of the spring connects to a support braket under the battery box. The purpose of this spring is to keep the clutch pedal retracted so that the throwout bearing does not touch the pressure plate finges when the clutch is not depressed. This spring breaks frequently and on my brother's 684 was absent. My brother was actually warned by an IH mechanic about the failure of these springs on these models of UK designed tractors and the resulting damage to throwout bearing and pressure plate.
If there was a method to lube the throwout bearing then having it spinning all the time the clutch wasn't depressed would not be a problem. Maybe we can have Bernard le mécano comment on the clutch adjustment and spring. Since he worked for IH in Canada he would have seen hundreds of these tractors. My 2 cents
