The throwout bearing and pressure plate are not worn because the bearing is riding against it, it is suppose to be like that according to the manual. There is no free play adjustment only pedal hight adjustment.

Hi Dale, there is supposed to be a spring that attaches to either the clutch foot pedal lever or the lever that goes into the torque tube. I forget exactlly where it connects but look for a hole drilled in either of those levers that would take about a 2" extension coil spring with hook on each end. The other end of the spring connects to a support braket under the battery box. The purpose of this spring is to keep the clutch pedal retracted so that the throwout bearing does not touch the pressure plate finges when the clutch is not depressed. This spring breaks frequently and on my brother's 684 was absent.

My brother was actually warned by an IH mechanic about the failure of these springs on these models of UK designed tractors and the resulting damage to throwout bearing and pressure plate. If there was a method to lube the throwout bearing then having it spinning all the time the clutch wasn't depressed would not be a problem.

Maybe we can have Bernard le mécano comment on the clutch adjustment and spring. Since he worked for IH in Canada he would have seen hundreds of these tractors.

My 2 cents
JB

Hey JB, this is the spring you're talking about. Mines a 1979 model 484 so it may posibly be different on later models.

Service Bulletin no.S-4380 dated 3-26-82 states a new self-adjusting clutch where the clutch release bearing is in constant contact with the clutch release fingers and as a result no free play is felt at the clutch pedal. The only adjustment is the pedal height adjustment as the clutch wears.

Hi Dale, on the fingers, have you bolts and nuts for adjustment? If so you have the late model, like 85 serie. If not, you have the early model, like 74 serie. It have a spring on this model, to keep pedal away from bearing. Bernard le Mécano Québec Canada

Did the bulletin happen to say what year there was a change to self adjust? I have an industrial 485 that has no freeplay.

Hi, Clanger, that is the spring. I helped my brother replace clutch, pressure plate, throwout and pilot bearings in a 454, 495 and 684 in the last three years. The 495 was new in 91 or 92 and all the tractors had the same mechanical release bearing setup. We also replaced the clutch in the 454 and 495 with the HD six paddle clutch that is for the 684.

When I picked up the clutch parts at the IH parts counter, John (has 20 + years of IH parts experience and he is the only one that I will deal with) said only the 695s and beyond would have the self adjusting hydraulic type clutch.

I have seen these self adjusting hydraulic throwout bearings on 7000 Fords and the replacement cost is $200 or more.

The IH throwout bearing was about $30.00.

If Dale had to pay in the range of $200 for the throwout bearing for his 484 then it possibly is a hydraulic self adjusting one.

Hi JB, on the 85 serie, a spring is loaded to keep the bearing in contact with fingers. A Teflon washer prevent the adjusting bolts from wear. On 454,74 and 84 serie, spring keep the bearing away from fingers, to prevent wear. The hydrolic adjustement is on 85,95,4200 serie with XL cab.On no-cab version, they have mecanical linkage.
