When the drive or driven nuts with the slots in them are installed, they automatically tighten up to a shoulder on the threaded shaft. They should not be loose, in fact you should tighten them a little when installing seals because that helps prevent oil leakage past the threads. Try loosening the 4 mounting cap screws on the bottom of the Lift-All pump and pry the pump towards the rear and then re-tighten the cap screws; you may be able to move the pump a fraction closer. I doubt the connecting shaft & retaining collars will ever wear out in your lifetime so do not concern yourself with a little slack.
