You must split the tractor just in front of the transmission. To do this, take off everything that runs across this joint. That is the trottle, choke and touch control rods, wiring and battery, and the steering shaft support. Also, the clutch operating rod. I probably forgot something, anyway you get the idea. Once all that stuff is loose and out of the way, use wood wedges blocks to wedge the front axle so the front part can't tilt side to side. Now suppot the front half of the tractor at the flat spot on the clutch housing just under the clutch. I suggest 6x6 wood cribbing. Make sure it is good and solid. Use a shop lift of some kind to support the back end. When splitting in front of the transmission, the back part is nearly balanced, unless you have something heavy on the back like a hitch or implement. In that case, the back may go down, so be careful. Now take out the 4 bolts that are in the main joint, one at a time and replace with longer bolts. The longer bolts help support things as you slide the two halves apart. Use a pry bar to slowly push back the rear half, rolling the rear wheels (Transmission should be in neutral)and the shop lift back. The main drive shaft will slide out of the clutch, and the main drive shaft flex joint just in front of the transmission will be exposed. When you are sure all is well supported, remove the 4 long bolts that you installed before. Now you can move the rear back enough to take the four bolts out of the main drive coupling. These are tapered shoulder bolts and may be wedged tightly in the holes. After you get the nuts off, use a 6 point wrench on the heads to break them loose. Important to use the correct size 6 point wrench, as the heads are very thin and it's easy to mess up and round off the heads, which you don't want to do. While you are at it, you may want to replace the rubber washers and the metal cup washers in this joint. Once that joint is loose, you can roll the rear on back enough to replace the transmission seal. Take out the bolt that holds the rear half of the main drive coupling in place and use a puller (or a pry bar) to get the coupling off. Then you can take the bolts out that retain the seal holder/bearing retainer and replace the seal. I'm not for sure you can replace the bearing from this end. It may be necessary to remove the transmission cover to get that bearing out. If you move the shaft forward when getting the bearing out, you'll pull it loose from the rear bearing and you will be taking the cover off anyway. While the tractor is apart, don't mess with the clutch. It needs to remain engaged while the tractor is split. Otherwise you will mess up the alignment of the clutch plate with the pilot bearing and you will not be able to slide the drive shaft back in when you reassemble. I did all of this on a C, not an A, but they are similar. It was not a real hard job. Took about 1/2 day or maybe a little longer. I only replace the seal, not the bearing. I probably left out some steps, but you get the idea. I'd suggest you get an A service manual and a parts catalog so you can see how this thing is put together before you start. Good luck!
