Got my MD home today!!!

Ok I got a good couple of questions for you guys. I got my MD home and it would not start on gas. it has the magneto and I went to check for spark and took a jumper cable and grounded out a new spark plug hooked up to the dist. and I did not see a spark. it was pitch black out when I was looking for the spark. so i took the cap off and on the rotor the was massive carbon buil up! I was supprised that it would even get so bad it was like 1/2 inch thick all the way accross. So i cleaned it and put it all back together and checked for spark again, the was no spark. I then took the magneto off so i could take it apart to see if i could see somthing wrong with it. Well it all looked to be intact. But the metel part that makes a conection with the cap was corroided a tad bid, not real bad. any way i had it in my hand and i turned the mag by hand and i could feel it clicking apporox two times per revaloution. So i went ahead and put my finger on the contact that was a little corroided and got a heck of a shock! and i was barley turning the thing! so can a one tell if the mag is good just by getting a good jolt by barley turning it? i have always had a coil dist set up. also what is the wire for that comes out of the mag on the front of it? I am going to get the books on it soon. but i figured mabey one of you guys would know. also we tried to pull it on the diesel side and it popped and smoked white but it just wasent warm enough to run. so im excited to get some spark into her. it is a 1950 md. it has a nice wide bucket and a handy nine speed, with fsctory power steer. i cant wait to take her for a spin.
