If using small spuds make you feel more secure , great . But when I was a kid , an elderly farmer , my Gramma who farmed all her life as a single Mother & my Dad always believed in using what they called strong seeds to get your best hill of potatoes . I guess they believe in the theory of starting with a new batch of seedlings , then after I think it was 3-4 seasons of using left overs from the bin of the previous years potatoes , they'd go buy new bag of fresh seedlings . Also there's quite a story pertaining to the seed potato having to rot in the soil to start the growth of the new spuds . I can't remember now what all it entailed now tho . You know how it is , you use the technique you grew up learning . But I haven't done any gardening for years after breaking my back & the knees went out on me from working on them a lot . I also remember agter planting all our rows with good choice seed , we take the left overs , dig a large dia. hole & drop them in & cover just to see what we'd get at digging time .I sure miss fresh home grow stuff .
