Older type mechanical seed cutter?? How do you cut the seed other than ye olde knife? I do not mean the large commercial ones of today.

The most trusting way is a sharp knife , cut between eyes leaving 2-3 eyes per section . When growing up , it was a family thing with us older kids . I helped cut many bags of spuds . Even did it in my sleep for a while after that . I even remember walking the dug rows ; drop & cover with foot load of dirt ' then stand on the dirt before proceeding . God bless

When dad was growin spuds, he had these cutting tables. There was a large sloping table that would hold 100-200 lb of potatoes, with a chute that fed into a sharp knife sticking out of the table in front of the cutter (operator). The cutter would grab a potato from the chute and pass it over the knife to make the seed pieces, which then were dropped into a gunny sack directly below the knife. He hired mostly women to do the cutting, each table seated two. I believe he had two tables. Very low-tech, and pre-OSHA, but it worked.

(quoted from post at 05:33:28 03/14/11) I plant small potatoes to avoid rot that comes with cutting.

"B" size seed is only about $2 a bag extra here. My big clumsy hands don't cut seed so well.

If using small spuds make you feel more secure , great . But when I was a kid , an elderly farmer , my Gramma who farmed all her life as a single Mother & my Dad always believed in using what they called strong seeds to get your best hill of potatoes . I guess they believe in the theory of starting with a new batch of seedlings , then after I think it was 3-4 seasons of using left overs from the bin of the previous years potatoes , they'd go buy new bag of fresh seedlings . Also there's quite a story pertaining to the seed potato having to rot in the soil to start the growth of the new spuds . I can't remember now what all it entailed now tho . You know how it is , you use the technique you grew up learning . But I haven't done any gardening for years after breaking my back & the knees went out on me from working on them a lot . I also remember agter planting all our rows with good choice seed , we take the left overs , dig a large dia. hole & drop them in & cover just to see what we'd get at digging time .I sure miss fresh home grow stuff . God bless
