My guess would be the lake has a natural spring feeding warm water in that spot weakening the ice. A lake doesn't have a current to move the water around. No wind action either when froze on top. What some on here don't understand is that some guys will travel a mile or more to different holes or to get to the other side of the lake or maybe lake access is far from the actual fishing spot. Just not practical to drill test holes everywhere you travel when fishing. If the ice is thick enough here its usually thick enough there. Just dumb luck to go in. Yet there is ALWAYS a risk! Again, just my guess.
