Brother was very lucky yesterday

his truck went through the ice on a lake in central MN, he managed to scramble out of the passenger window before he got submerged, if he'd had a seat belt on or hesitated for just a few seconds he would have not made it out of the cab in time. Guess God has more plans for him. I am very thankful today. Will be a week before they can get it out of the lake. $20,000 sitting down there that ins wont cover I am sure. He said he dove there just a few days ago.

insurance will cover it under comprehensive portion of the policy. dnr gets real snotty over a fuel and oil spill in waterways. he is sure lucky he made it out!!!

Ouch. $20,ooo plus what it costs to extract it and the DNR fine. I went through the ice about 53 years ago on foot, up to my armpits. Made a believer out of me, if you can prove to me that the ice is three feet thick, that is not enough to get me on it. Like frozen ground a lot better than frozen water. Your brother was indeed VERY lucky.

Glad to hear he is ok! Boy dosent it just shake you up. My brother got hurt a month ago cutting firewood, I felt awful knowing what could have happened, I was right behind him as he was cutting a limb, I wanted to tell him lets look this downed tree over, but he was to hasty, started cutting threw a limb under pressure and it let go and destroyed his nose, hit him right in the face and knocked him off his feet. Looked like a crushed egg shell, I took him to the hospital and was pretty shooken up over it.

If i read the story right, then your brother must be missing a couple brain cells if he drove that truck on ice that was there only a couple day's after when he went swimming there.

It looks more like his survival instinct was stronger than his suicide attempt.

I dident think that when I read the post. Thats kinda of an awful thing to say to someone. My brother plows a track on a lake for him and other guys to do ice racing with studed tire dirt bikes, what if he fell threw, would it be trying to commit suicide?

He DROVE through there just a few days prior, not dove. He was ice fishing and was in the process of looking for a more productive spot to place the icehouse. Most lakes in MN are safe, some have 24" plus of ice. He just happened to hit a spot that must have some sort of current change under it or something. He has been driving on lakes for 22 years, and this certain lake he has fished on for 20.

I have been told that when you take your car/truck on a frozen lake or pond you are no longer covered.

yes probably is like trying to commit suicide, just plain foolish if he didnt walk it and check the ice thickness. no safety involved there. should be paying out of his own pocket for recovery and clean up then next time he would think .

If there's a lot of snow before it gets real cold, it will insulate the ice. The only sure way to tell if it's safe is to drill several holes right through and measure it. Close to shore is usually the worst place. I cleared snow for the Numb Bum 24 hour motorcycle ice race and there was a lot of snow at one edge of lake because of trees. The ice on the lake was 30+ inches thick but under the deep snow the front wheels on the skid steer went fell through after I cleared it. I put the bucket down to lift them up and pushed myself back. Then I covered the thin area back with snow. There was a whole whack of vehicles in the main parking/pit area up to 1 and 1 1/2 ton trucks. Dave

Comp insurance should cover it . Of course no ice is ever "safe" but it is driven on around here all the time. You normally feel that if you have to drill through two feet of ice one day it is safe the next. Currents are what will get you. Minn had good freeze on most central located lakes before we got snow but that being said, once heavy snow sits on ice for a few days the ice under it can dwindle. Totally depends on the situation. I never feel good about driving on it but have many times, quit ice fishing about ten years ago though. Far as seat belt, they don't always come off that easy, especially if you are in a panic situation. Always recommended to unstrap before going out on the ice and lots drive with opened windows. Not appropriate to call some one an idiot or worse. We all drive down the highway at 70 miles and hour with another vehicle comeing at us with only four to six feet between us when we meet, would you stand out there that close to oncoming traffic.

Most all lakes in this area and north are good to go, Bigger trucks than his pulling huge sgacks all over the lakes, and this lake. People been driving on the lake for over a month. I broke through one time on Lak of the woods in early march when the lake was covered in 30"ice and there were dump trucks plowing roads. Just happened to be unlucky enough to a spot that who knows why it broke through, Mine stayed partially aboce the ice so we were able to snatch it out within an hour. BTW, Nice desrespectful word for families that may have mentally disabled person in the family. I say you have more isues than any one that IS disabled.

Lots of inconsiderate comments on here, Must have nothing better to do then be trolls. Glad to hear he is okay

He apparently swam in that same lake only 3 days before driving on it with the truck.

You got a judgement problem if you think that is OK.

Seems to me there would be some solution to the problem of driving vehicle on ice so they wouldn't sink. I would be very leery of taking a 20K vehicle out on the ice. Seems that there would be some way to temporarily attach some flotation devices to keep it from sinking. Not necessarily to make it "seaworthy", just enough so it wouldn't sink and so you could recover it. And to those who made the nasty comments, in some places it's very common to drive vehicles on the ice, most of the time it's done safely.

And John S-B would be the one to have to go out to rescue you when you broke thru the ice. There would never be enough ice for me to trust, even if it was all solid with the ground underneeth frozen as I could not be sure there would not be some water under the ice.

agrred lake travel is an accepted mode of travel , just like airplanes and submarines , certainly happy he survived ,, maybe GOD has more plans ,, for inventors out ther that like to play with air bags , what if a truck or equipment used often on ice were equipped with dual rocker panel area ponttons that the driver could set to deploy immeddiatly or when remotely when it is deemed a fall thru is in evitable after break thru situation worsens ,, seems to me .2- 20 ft bags 3ft thru would hold up a semi and then a set on the trailer ,, probably use 2ft wide on pickups ,. i liked watching ice road trucker escapades ,,

Who would swim in a lake in the north right now? Are you that stupid, it was probably a typeing error, HES DROVE ON IT 3 DAYS EARILER. NOT DOVE IN IT. DUMMY.

Now I'm curious. Are you required by law to ware seat belt when driving on lake? I am not shunning your brother as I sometimes drive public roads without seat belt, just curious.

Dave sorry to here about your brother but what is ever sorrier is the guys flaming you here. What haven't they seen ice road truckers?? Shoot they have ice races in MI one the lakes up there on motorcycles with long spikes in the tires. They have been driving on lakes for many decades and have and will keep doing it. Shoot look at the buildings they set out on the lakes to go ice fishing in some of those are also as big as a house

That's hilarious. I can just see it now. I have a plaque on my wall, stating I cought a 3 lb walleye , and "outfished" all 9,999 other guys who bored a hole in the ice. Geez, where can I sign up?

To all the guys with the negative remarks: Here in the north country driving on the lakes is a common thing. If you want to go fishing hop in the pickup, drive out on the ice, drill some holes and start fishing. So maybe most of you southern boys don't understand the way it is!

My guess would be the lake has a natural spring feeding warm water in that spot weakening the ice. A lake doesn't have a current to move the water around. No wind action either when froze on top.
What some on here don't understand is that some guys will travel a mile or more to different holes or to get to the other side of the lake or maybe lake access is far from the actual fishing spot.
Just not practical to drill test holes everywhere you travel when fishing. If the ice is thick enough here its usually thick enough there. Just dumb luck to go in. Yet there is ALWAYS a risk!
Again, just my guess.

I'm not knocking your brother, but are you aware you should go down with the auto until the water does kind of get to a nuteral pressure inside the cab. It then lets you open the door in order to get out, and the hole up on top will not be plugged with a auto.

As the vehickle goes down, you can get pinched between the auto and the ice as you exit.

So you understand I'm not so sure I could keep calm enough myself, it is just what is preached in our area.

Don't mind those sothern coments. Our local Wal-Mart put all ice fishing stock in the clearance bin when a top ranking (warm climate) Wal-Mart man asked what the heck that stuff was.

A friend of mine worked in that department, and he himself was told to get rid of it, no one can walk on water. The stuff was gone for about a year before they restocked.

The workers still to this day remark about why the north won the war. Don't kill the messanger! (read on)

Driving on the ice is as comon in the winter here as it is driving down a ice covered road...point A to point B. It seems every couple of years someone gets a taste of muddy water.

When the brand new bridge across the Mississippi River west of Prarie Du Chine Wisc. (about one year old)( AND that had hundreds of northern born inspectors), ended up having poor quality steel, it was closed down. They brought up a car ferry to move the vehickles back and forth. Once the river started to freeze over, they were in a jamb, so they took backhoes out on the ice to tear up the ice, and keep the path clear of ice.

OK you sothern guys, here is your payback...It was the Northern folks that ran the backhoes / that did not float. And no they did not learn the first three times either, but only stupid people would do it over four times, so they stopped after the fourth time.

Clearwater Watershed District has aerators in some lakes within the District- don"t know if they have warning signs at each public access. If the lake has springs feeding it, those areas can thin out. Glad he made it out OK.

3 pages of expert opinions.Kinda makes you wonder why you post things huh? Glad he got out, bet he was a little chilly except for around the seat of his pants. That new truck better have external airbags.

Dave

I taught school in the South. Ocasionally we got students rom the North, once I got one from Alaska. I made it a point to tell them that it NEVER gets cold enough in our area to safely walk out on a frozen pond.

A bunch of guys died up here on lake erie awhile back from trying ice fishing. They had big fourwheelers that went to the bottom ! I sure would not drive a pickup onto a frozen lake on purpose.
Sounds like a good place to run one of those amphibious cars or military ducks.

Wow! So glad to hear that he made it out safe. I'm not much for ice fishing, and this is the reason why. Can do everything right, and still all it takes is a weak spot for whatever reason.

I have two rules when driving on the ice.
Windows are down and no seat belts. Also
watch where others are driving and some
lakes use christmas trees as a guide to
mark the road as well as the miles out you
are. If you see two trees lying down and crossed
you have a bad spot. I have have been on lakes
that the trees and or gps are the only way
to get off because of fog or snow. The old
timers tied a rag on the steering wheel to keep
track of their direction. Ice fishing can be
fun, but can be dangerous also.

Currents in lakes, depends on the lake. Our local lake is 12 miles long, one to one and half mile wide,it is the Minnesota river so there are definetely spots where current is at work. On the shallow end of the lake you will see the path the current takes when it starts to thaw in spring. Most who frequent the lake know what areas it affects but you never know for sure. Also has some springs. Ice heaves are another thing you need to be aware of. Not unusual to see a lot of cars parked in the parking lot and fishermen walking out whereas others are driving on the ice. Never l00 per cent safe. But, what is.

Was this buy the narrows?
There is a mfg plant in a town close to use & There was a guy that came up north here tocheck over the stuff they made, The company told the workers to show him around the area.
He got in the car, sat in the front seat in the middle & the driver went to a lake, I think the
ice he ever seen had been in a drink.
They said he was under the dash & had to be pulled out by his legs, Now in MN that is reel stupid.
Ice is just as safe as driving on any road or hiway, Things happen no matter where you are.

We can't all be as smart as you,i have to rely on what the post said.
There's more people that dive in freezing cold water, just for the F of it.

I live in North-east Iowa. I have NEVER been out on the ice fishing. I think it is a real dangerous thing to be doing. Really dangerous to drive a truck/car on the ice. I have been to three funerals of guys that liked to ice fish. They all swore that it was safe to do.

I will get to go to another funeral if they can find the body. Yesterday a family friend"s son went into the Maquoketa River on a snowmoble. His buddy got out he did not.
Fatal fall through the ice
