This is entirely possible. There is a program you can download for free called Audacity. It is a multi track recorder which allows you to lay down a track, then play it back and put another one down with it. I am not sure what the limitations are but I have had 8-10 tracks recorded. You could potentially play every instrument yourself and provide the vocals and the harmony. But you could lay down just one part of a song then send the saved file to another member and he/she could open it on their computer and add their own track to it. Then when it's all done someone could adjust the levels of each musician and master it to a MP3 format then everyone could listen to it. There are microphones you can get that have a USB plug on the end that just plug right in to your computer.
I played around with it a bit last winter and I'm no professional musician by any means but I was pleased with the results.
