Lou--I had one when I lived in Iowa, just because I was more interested in the process used to obtain the permit, not the likelihood of having to ever use a gun for protection. That was about 15 years ago.
When I took the Iowa class, there were people that got the permit that had NEVER fired a handgun before, that were then going to buy one for "protection" reasons.....BAD IDEA to me.
The one thing about the class that I remember, was the police instructor saying that "EVEN IF someone was armed, in your home, and PERCEIVED to be a lethal threat, that BEFORE you pull the trigger, you had BETTER have warned the intruder more than once to leave, AND YOU THE PERMIT HOLDER better be backed into a corner and CONVINCED you were in a LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, or you would end up being the one getting the worse out of the resulting end.
I like the idea of WI allowing CC Permits, and will get one when available. I also would like to see anyone that is allowed to get one, be required to pass an annual Psychological evaluation each and every year in order to keep the permit------Law Enforcement personnel as well.
Someone wrote in this thread-- "Think hard before going for it , it can get you in a lot of trouble. The education corse is a great one to take even if you don't get the permit. Take a corse thru a place that knows what there doing."
I would add, make sure you REALLY KNOW how to handle correctly any handgun you plan to carry.
