Having been on both the seller's side and the buyer's side, with equipment, livestock, and lots of other things, and also having been bitten a couple times, I tend to look after myself. I also have a service business, sometimes people will owe me 400-500 at the end of the day. In this case, I'll take a check, for 2 reasons, 1. That check is a legal document, if it bounces, it is can be considered fraud. 2. Since my business is an extra, and not my bread and butter, if it does bounce, all I'm out is my time and a few bucks for my expenses for the day. So far none have bounced.

However, when selling anything, I tell people, cash or a bank note, no personal checks. I've had people show up expecting to pull out the checkbook anyway. It pisses them off when I tell them to go the 10 miles into town to the bank (or machine) and either cash their own check, or get the cash, or no goods. I think I've only had one person not come back. On the larger stuff I seem to have little problems, it's the 50 or 100 dollar stuff that sems to be the problem. I figure that people know if they have 2-3000, or whatever, but if they account is running from 0 to 100 to -50 all the time, it's pretty easy to write that check on the wrong day.

The other thing that I've done a couple times when I've stumbled across something I want, is to write a cheque for the full amount to ask them to hold it for me, and replace it with the cash when I pick the item up. Most guys seem surprised when I suggest it, but none have ever said no.
