Have you ever used a COM tractor before? They take a little getting us to. Because they drive through a converter with a direct drive lockup they seem to "lack luster" as you put it. When you pull the direct drive lever on the dash down does the tractor give a small lurch and can you now stall the tractor under load? If so you may just have to learn the charateristics of the tractor. Since you don't know the history of the tractor I would drain the trans fluids and filters, and refill with TYPE A transmission fluid. Many "universal Trans. fluids" are thicker and cause the tractor to be slugish. Good luck with it. They were nice little tractors.
