Gas or diesel are fine. A lot of people want diesels, but the hobby farmer in a year wouldn't realize a difference in a year.

New Holland, John Deere, International Harvester, Oliver, Case all made equally good balers in the 1960's that are good for farmette use. For horses, I have found the small square bales are best compared to the round bales. They waste a lot unless you control how much is given to them. Be sure hay for horses is dry when baled. Horses don't have much tolerance for moldy hay.
Moldy hay can cause mares to mis-carry.

As far as rakes go. I prefer the New Idea rakes because they have a reversing feature that allows you to tedd the hay. Unless you want to put big bucks into a haybine that crimps the stalks to aid drying use a standard cycle mower and the New Idea rake. I have a steel wheeled one and a rubber wheeled one. They've served me well.
