Hope you're kidding about any trailer behind that little thing? I bought a 99 Sportage LX 4WD last fall for $1500. Super maintained, 120K miles, five speed manual and 2 liter engine. I was leary it'd be a death-trap on ice, but since it's a four-door, I figured we'd buy it as a spare 4WD. It's the fancy model - AC, power windows, etc. When I bought it - I figured I'd hate it. But we needed a vehicle we could flat-tow 800 miles with my Ford diesel truck. I needed to deliver the truck and leave it somewhere - and then drive the Kia home. Kia was perfect since it has part-time 4WD and can be towed on all four wheels.
Long story short - I love this thing. Very well built, a lot more power than I figured a 2 liter could have in a little 4 door SUV. Driving it home from Michigan at 75 MPH most of the way - with three people, a dog, and any gear we could fit into it - and got 25 MPG for the trip. Also, it's got the smoothest shifting five speed I've ever driven. And to my surprise - that trans is NOT Korean - it's a Gertrag - same make my Dodge Cummins diesel truck has. And, the 2 liter engine is a Mazda copy. That's pretty amazing. It's also much better on ice that I thought it could be. Maybe because of the longer wheelbase with four doors?
What you're talking about sounds like what I was looking to do with a Chevy Geo Tracker 4WD. Some had single-overhead cams and throttle body injection - while other have dual overhead cams and sequential port injection. Both are 1.6 liters, but the latter has more power and gets better fuel mileage - around 2 MPG better overall. But, I'll tell you one thing. You don't want to drive a two-door Tracker in the snow or ice - it IS a death trap - even with four studded snows on it.
