Probably taking a rest, there are several species around here, besides the red tail, the smaller ones are aggressive, I had one inside a thick shrub tree once. Something going on in there, as I am watching the tree move a little, never thought there would be a hawk inside it. Poked his head out and flew right at me, under the soffit of the porch, then a hard right and out. This species I see more and more of, real aggressive, seen a few missed attempts at the bird feeder, which always means one of em will fly into the bow window, dove did that once, and still made a get away.
In front of my deer stand, every morning, one odf these patrols the stand of oats, a 2nd crop came up after the early august harvest, probably all kinds of mice in there, he skims along the top and just hovers sometimes, lands and keeps going til he gets one, and I've not seen him come up with one yet, those oats sure are a crowd pleaser, the deer are in there every night, and the hawks keep a close watch from nearby high voltage line towers
