That's a truly accurate post that sounds like someone with a lot of real-life unbiased experience. Congratulations. It is easy to see why Oliver tended to price their tractors high vs. the competition. The Olivers had more features, usually used more iron, and, in my opinion at least, were better designed and engineered than the rest. Think about the cost savings building only 2 cylinders vs. 6 and being able to get by with a primitive hand clutch and lightweight frame. So price made the others attractive, I agree. But for those willing to pay the money for the Cadillac of tractors, the Oliver is worth every penny. Now about the gear noise comment from another post, we can't refute that there was gear noise, mainly in 6th gear. But Olivers beginning with the 880 used helical gear transmissions which brought gear noise down to among the lowest levels in the industry. The early spur gear trannys were noisy because of Oliver's high speed 6 cylinder going through spur gears, which inherently create a lot of noise. But those Oliver trannys are tough, to be sure. Here's my humble opinion of the 4020. It is the most overrated tractor of all time. I realize how many they sold, but I can't see why. I agree that they have a superior hydraulic system and have good looks, but they are cumbersome, have poor visibility, and local ones seem to overheat on warm days even with side panels removed and cooling system checked.
