Sounds like the big change was the set of phone lines. Don't bother taking machine to the internet company, it will work right there - you would need a service call to your location to see if they can make it right. Probably better to spend the money on the phone company, and have them check your lines. There are lots of things that are their fault & they should fix for free; and there are things on your side of the service enterence that can cause problems. Some are: cordless phones, even if they are not being used, can set up a hum for the modem. You did use twisted cable for any extensions in the house? You didn't run any phone line in parallel with electrical wiring anywhere in the house? Your phone line does not run near the electrical service enterence? The other big problem is distance from the phone company. The farther away you are from them, the worse the lines will be, and 56k especially will not work at all at long (~10 miles) distances. It is better to set your modem to 33k in those cases. I used to have a hell of a time getting connected; I had used flat wire for my extension, had my modem 2 feet from the service enterance, and have about a 12 mile route from the phone company, plus we are the very last (terminator) phone on the company line. The phone company fixed a problem in one of their boxes 5 miles from us, & without changing any of my other problems, have had easy access at 33k since. Being the last phone on the line has cost me 2 modems tho - spikes & lightening has no where else to go so it comes out in my equipment... Good luck. --->Paul
