Just an idea. Have you looked into the plastic sleeves that slip over each bale? Pick the bale up and slide it over like a hefty bag. My soon to be FIL uses them. He says if he is carefull he can use one 3 times.
Good luck. I hear ya about be'n short this year. Buddy of mine had a new slant on it. I asked him if he was going to be ok on hay, he said he would have plenty of hay, just was going to be short on cows come May.
