Based on the readings I took while it was running, + the high 30 ampere reading on the dashboard ammeter which I saw also at the time of repair with new parts in place and I think an oxidized connection at the V.R. plug caused that, I believe but can't remember, thought it should be balanced around 0 on the ammeter, not +30 when fully charged and running correctly. Have to make a run with er today and hope that is not excessive enough to fry the points in the ignition, got that ole 292 running crisp, just right. I suspect something is wrong now, when I first got the truck, both of these components Alt & V.R. were bad, it had barely enough juice charging to make it 800 some odd miles home, shortly thereafter, the battery was drawing down and was running off the battery only, eventually drawing it down while running with lights on until it stalled. New parts and checking per the shop manual instructions, everything was good. Nothing like doing a job twice and burning up a $100 dollar bill LOL ! At least I spotted the disconnected wire though, fixed that erratic directional (oxidized connection at a plug ) always something, but at least it's easy to work on. The handiest tool to have is one of those inexpensive electrical terminal wire brush sets from Napa, most troubles on this truck have just been oxidized connections.
