I was working on this 64 F-600 today, finally figured out where the oxidized connection was that made the right rear directional have a mind of it's own ! Low and behold while giving it the once over, I see the ground wire from the alternator to the corner of the voltage regulator on the fender well was disconnected ! I believe that wire comes from the alternator, was in that part of the harness. I do have the shop manual for the beast, will have to read up on it again.

I'm wondering what this may have damaged, either voltage regulator or alternator, the charging system now seems to be reading low, nothing higher than 13 volts on one meter, and barely above 12 volts on another meter, ammeter guage on the dashboard is now at 30 amperes and rising as you throttle up the motor, except when you turn the lights on, seems to hover close to zero again. Less than 1000 miles since both the voltage regulator and alternator was replaced, at which time there was also a draw off the battery, but the new parts cured that, and I had the problem cured, also checked out according to the shop manual, no genius when it comes to these things, just wondering what that broken ground connection might have done, can't remember readings I took when I fixed it that time, should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts correct and the amperes on the guage should not be so high I thought.

Here's the old beast:

If a vr has a bad ground reference it can effect charge voltage... it will depend on the circuit type on how it effects it. if B circuit ( field power from VR ).. then I would suspect a bad ground would make for overcharging... perhaps overworking the alternator.

Looks like time for a 'free' test at the auto store..

Based on the readings I took while it was running, + the high 30 ampere reading on the dashboard ammeter which I saw also at the time of repair with new parts in place and I think an oxidized connection at the V.R. plug caused that, I believe but can't remember, thought it should be balanced around 0 on the ammeter, not +30 when fully charged and running correctly. Have to make a run with er today and hope that is not excessive enough to fry the points in the ignition, got that ole 292 running crisp, just right. I suspect something is wrong now, when I first got the truck, both of these components Alt & V.R. were bad, it had barely enough juice charging to make it 800 some odd miles home, shortly thereafter, the battery was drawing down and was running off the battery only, eventually drawing it down while running with lights on until it stalled. New parts and checking per the shop manual instructions, everything was good. Nothing like doing a job twice and burning up a $100 dollar bill LOL ! At least I spotted the disconnected wire though, fixed that erratic directional (oxidized connection at a plug ) always something, but at least it's easy to work on. The handiest tool to have is one of those inexpensive electrical terminal wire brush sets from Napa, most troubles on this truck have just been oxidized connections.
