I think the last time I checked at the feed store it was well over $8.00/bale. This is a feed store next to the famous Saratoga racetrack, so the mark up is significant, however the quality of the hay they sell is always top notch. Farmers, if they have any, ( I think a lot of it gets chopped) will be less, but like I said, I don't think it's common practice to make small squares of alfalfa around here any more. We kept 5 acres of it and baled same for years for our hay eating monsters. Just a few years ago, I got some nice 1st cut and 2nd cut for $2.75 but I knew the guy since I was a kid, was also having him haul bedding in as well, + he's got some corn on our place, I still asked if that was enough, and would have paid more no questions asked, but he said it was fine. It was highly appreciated and we were thankful for the deal. I think anyone else would have paid more, was as good as the high priced feed store hay. I reality, it is hard to believe people complain about the price, they lose sight of what it takes to put it up, the people baling the hay need to turn a profit just like anyone else, why people don't understand that is hard to figure out.
