Man if I could get $5. I would be in hay heaven. I am selling a few at a convience store down the road for 2.50. Had several lookers and they all say the quality is good but they want second crop hay at 2.50 or first at 1.75 to 2.00. I have 1300 small squares (50/55 #) of Alfalfa/Timothy. A grass field I will cut next week. If you got a big truck/trailer come on up. Bob

I read through all the posts and basically have to say, consider yourself lucky. At the feed store, with a retail markup of course, we've paid $20.00 a bale for about a 70-80 pound bale.

I'm in Georgia in the middle of the southeast drought and in an area where not much alfalfa is grown, but it's still painful.

The norm here is Bermuda Grass Hay but it's just about impossible to find because of the drought and the price for it is approaching $10.00 a bale for about a 40-50 pound bale.

Praying for rain next year!!!

Larry

We cut and bale about 50 acres of good grass, timothy, and clover mix hay for our horses and sell the rest. We got $ 2.25/bale off the field with people picking up their own. We delivered hay at $ 2.75/bale within 10 miles.

I think the last time I checked at the feed store it was well over $8.00/bale. This is a feed store next to the famous Saratoga racetrack, so the mark up is significant, however the quality of the hay they sell is always top notch. Farmers, if they have any, ( I think a lot of it gets chopped) will be less, but like I said, I don't think it's common practice to make small squares of alfalfa around here any more. We kept 5 acres of it and baled same for years for our hay eating monsters.

Just a few years ago, I got some nice 1st cut and 2nd cut for $2.75 but I knew the guy since I was a kid, was also having him haul bedding in as well, + he's got some corn on our place, I still asked if that was enough, and would have paid more no questions asked, but he said it was fine. It was highly appreciated and we were thankful for the deal. I think anyone else would have paid more, was as good as the high priced feed store hay.

I reality, it is hard to believe people complain about the price, they lose sight of what it takes to put it up, the people baling the hay need to turn a profit just like anyone else, why people don't understand that is hard to figure out.

I have Timothy and orchard grass. With fert, lime fuel and twine I have 2.25 in it. Not counting rent for the ground and cost of equipment. The other day the guy that owens the local car dealership called and asked what was I asking for my hay. When I told him $4.50 He cryed like a baby.I told him to think about it the next time he charges someone $80.00/Hr to work on there car.As of the first of the year if I have any hay left the price will go up to $6.00 per bale. When they cry about it I'll tell them they can let the horses eat snow balls.I'm not in a very sypathetic mood toward horse people any longer.

I got some real nice alfalfa/timothy this year and advertised it for $5.00/bale. Aint nobody knocking my door down for it yet, and another cutting on the way. Wouldn't mind but I don't have much storage space, so I may have to reconsider that price.

In Puget Sound after 200-300 mile ride, those horse crazy people pay 8-9 a bale cheaper if ya get the whole truck, but vet bills eat up building funds. I got out of that business and got me a tractor. LOL Wayne

Local farmer's Co-op here in Middle TN can't keep small squares of alfalfa. They sell for $7.00 to $7.50 per bale when they have them. Counter men are afraid they are not going to be able to get more...

North of KC MO in the field $5. I dont know how someone could possibly sell small square hay for less than $3 to $3.50 per bale. My break is in that neighborhood depending on yield, fertilizer used etc. Thats without even talking about fuel. $1.75 per bale that went out with horsedrawn equipment and fuel at .30 cents per gallon(or less). Why in the world would you go to all the work and not make something doing it.

Main reason is good old supply and demand. When diesel wasn't 3 bucks, and twine was $18 a bale, and the hayfields were free (which they were around here, until this year), you could make a buck at $1.75. And you couldn't get any more than that, because there was plenty of $1.75 (or $1.50) hay around.

No alfalfa grown around here, but 100# alfalfa bales in the feed stores are $10+ a bale. Small "prairie" grass, 40-50# bales, are bringing $3.00 to $3.50. I never paid more than $1.75 in years past. We're having 500 bales put in a barn on one place for $3.50, and hauling 400 bales ourselves to another place for $3.25. Ouch. Mama's little horse hobby has become a monster.

I just got $2.40 a bale for some decent alfalfa with some grass mixed in (Western Illinois region). I see ads in the local papers for people selling alfalfa bales for about $3 or a little more. Big rounds were selling for at least $80-90 late this last winter around here.

Last I checked and that was back in march it was going for around $7 a bale. Also last time I tried to find any just a month or so ago there was none to be had so even if I had found some it would have been high

Wow, 7$ a bale. People here would let their critters die at that price. Old folks selling hay for 1.75$ a bale delivered around me. How are you supposed to make a buck.

The "old folks" must be related to the same old farts down here that do the same thing. I don't think they even sit down and think about what it costs them.
We were selling for 2.75 delivered, and not really making anything. We only did it because we had the hayand didn't need it, we needed the money, and the market was ours if we wanted it.... but I wouldn't call it lucrative. If we didn't want to make the hay, it would have come from somewhere else quite easily at that price.

I really scratch my head when I watch some guys buy round bales next door for 20 bucks a bale, haul them home, roll them out, square bale them, and then turn around and sell the idiot blocks for 2.25. My math isn't good, but I can't see how those numbers work...

If they are buying at 2.25 coming out the arse of the baler and have some kind of bale unroller feeding the baler I can see it, maybe. You'd not want to pay for twine on the rounds too though.

Nah, they aren't set up that good. They're buying them next door for 20 bucks, hauling them a few at a time about 35 miles, and as far as I know, doing the whole thing manually.... They must like entertainemnet.
