PTO question

I was at TSC looking around over the weekend. I noticed that they had an adaptor that goes on a 1000rpm PTO that makes it so a 540 rpm PTO would fit the PTO. My question is what does that do to the 540 rpm equipment you would run off of the PTO? Does it tear it up or does it work just fine? Thanks for the input. tjh72
