Two possibilities, fuel flow limitation and a failing coil. The most likely causes of fuel flow limitation are: a build up of varnish in the fuel lines; ditto in the screens, both in the filter and the carburetor inlet fitting; plugged gas tank vent; sticking float; Check by pulling the drain plug from the bottom of the carburetor. After a half cup rushes out the fuel should flow in a steady stream, 1/8" diameter or greater. If not there's your problem. Then break the line at the inlet to the carburetor and compare the flows. If the coil, you can tell that by checking for spark by taking the coil to distributor cap wire out of the distributor and holding it near ground (1/4-1/2") while cranking a good coil should show a fat blue spark. A bad coil will show no spark or a thin yellow spark. Before you plunk down for a new coil, replacing the capacitor across the points is a good idea, though I've not had one of them recover. Once failed they've stayed failed. That will also lead to a thin yellow spark. There's probably more details on this topic in the archives. Its asked about weekly. Gerald J.
