The diesels only come in the "heavy duty" 3/4 ton and bigger trucks. In my business (emergency road service for commercial trucks) I see a lot of "hot shot" rigs. These guys and gals make a living by putting 60 to 100 thousand miles a year on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks pulling a trailer. My opinions: Avoid the 6.0 Ford Powerstroke. Avoid the "pre Duramax" GM diesels. I've seen 7.3 Ford Powerstrokes with near a million miles still in service. Every body that has a GM DuraMax seems to like it. For these folks the Dodge/Cummins is number one choice; out numbers all others about 8 to 1. These opinions ain't mine but those of 8o to 100 different people that drive these things for a living.
