Well it's time to start looking at getting a truck. Hopefully the insurance company will be settling and I can get me a newer truck to replace the suburban. I was wondering what you guys thought of the newer chevys and dodges. I was also wondering what engines would be best. I know that diesel would be better than gas, but the budget may not cooperate. Has anyone out there used the 6.0 vortec engine and the 8.0 duramax if it is available in the lighter duty trucks? I am hopefully going to get a gooseneck trailer to replace the bumper pull one for towing. I don't want to make the ford owners mad but I won't consider a ford. I worked for ford for 17 years and don't like the way we were treated. Thanks for any help. Jon

As far as I am concerned these replies are full are all full of $hit. This business of my dad is stronger than yours is what this is! I have a 05 6.0 Powerstroke and have not a lick of trouble with it. These forums are all here-say no matter what brands. These type questions don"t even may since, because my dad will kick anybodys a$$.

That's funny about how you feel about the Fords. I once worked for the IRS and I didn't like how I was treated either, but I still pay my taxes!

By the way MY truck is a 2000 Chevy 3/4 ton (not HD) 5.3 gas V-8. 210,000 miles. Pulls good, runs good, Gets near 20 mpg on the road. If it ever wears out I'll look for another one like it.

I have a 06 Duramax, It has been a good truck so far. I get about 18 - 20 MPG empty and about 13 towing a descent size trailer. If you can wait this long and afford it, the rumor is that GM is suppost to put the Duramax in the Sububurban in 08.

I was open to buying any of the big three's truck. As some of the other have pointed out stay from the 6.0 ford's I know a few people with the 7.3's and they have had no issues. The 6.0's have had tons of issues. When I was buying my truck a few folks told me that Dodge was coming out with a "dual mass flywheel" in 06 and to stay away from getting a Dodge with a hand shaker. They said the pre - 06 Dodge's with the hand shaker ( they said the automatics were okay at best ) were pretty built proof.

I personally bought the GM product because the motor has not had any real issues and there automatic transmission is the best in the business. I personally liked the interior of the Chevy better also. I tow only 6 - 10 times a year. If you plan on doing alot of towing I think a pre 06 Dodge with a hand shaker wins hands down. If you are looking to not shift gears and want some "creature comfort" the GM product is you best option.

Scott

I have an '03 Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0. I am satisfied until I get to the fuel pump. Last tankful was 89 octane pulling a AC D-17 on a gooseneck all freeway. I got 10.1 MPG. The best I have ever been able to obtain is 12 empty without trailer on the freeway. I now understand why the previous owner traded it in for a compact. Even I drive my small car to work daily as I can't justify the cost to operate the truck. What kind of mileage are you getting?

Are you looking for a truck or a pickup? Around here a truck is a 2 ton or better, 1/2 tons through 1 tons are pickups... Since you said replace a Suburban, I'll assume a pickup...

What are you doing with it? Right now I have a 3/4 ton Suburban, if I were to replace it with anything, it would probably be the same or an Excursion with Powerstroke... If a pickup, only choice would be a Dodge with Cummins...would consider a Duramax, but I wouldn't dare spend more than $13-15000, and the Duramaxes aren't available in that range. Pick up an 01 Cummins would be my suggestion for a pickup.

The diesels only come in the "heavy duty" 3/4 ton and bigger trucks. In my business (emergency road service for commercial trucks) I see a lot of "hot shot" rigs. These guys and gals make a living by putting 60 to 100 thousand miles a year on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks pulling a trailer.
My opinions:
Avoid the 6.0 Ford Powerstroke.
Avoid the "pre Duramax" GM diesels.
I've seen 7.3 Ford Powerstrokes with near a million miles still in service.
Every body that has a GM DuraMax seems to like it.
For these folks the Dodge/Cummins is number one choice; out numbers all others about 8 to 1.

These opinions ain't mine but those of 8o to 100 different people that drive these things for a living.
