need help on Golden Jubilee 1953/52 air intake

I bought a air intake I guess thats what it is called. It is the pipe that comes from the carbarator and goes to the coffee can looking item under the hood. We the problem is the lower half of the can comes off and their is a level marker to be filled with some kind of oil or I guess. I don't know what kind of oil or if it is really oil that goes their. Can someone please help me.... Thanks, Stilltoe
