On the vast majority of diesel engines, you can roughly check cam timimg by watching the rocker arms for the cylinder in question as the piston approaches TDC of the exhaust stroke. What you are looking for is what is known as "split overlap". This is the point where the intake is JUST starting to open, and where the exhaust is JUST about closed. When you reach the point where the valves are open the same distance, your piston should be darn near, if not right on, TDC of the exhaust stroke. Absolute best way to check cam timimg is with a degree wheel and one-inch travel dial indicator. But for that, you would need the specs for the engine you are working on. If you have this thing running, I doubt your cam timing is off. If it was off by a tooth or more, on most diesels you would have the valves and pistons making intimate contact.
