Personal Experience: '46 Ford flathead V-8. It was the sweetest running thing you ever heard, and didn't burn a drop of oil. I wanted to do the best thing in the world, so I changed to a good detergent oil. Within a few thousand miles it was smoking and using oil something fierce. Non-detergent oil lets the dirt and crud sink to the bottom of the pan, that's why it's good for compressors and electric motors. Detergent holds the junk in suspension so it gets drained each time, and will pick up all that undrained dirt (from using NON-D) and use it to wear out your engine. Yes, Non-D is light duty, but if it's worked all these years, I sure wouldn't change to detergent. (8N oil filters are bypass - the actual feed hole in the filter can is about 1/16 inch. All the rest of the oil is not filtered.)
