Non-Detergent Oil Or Not?

I'm planning to do my first oil change on a '52 Ford 8N. I called the previous owner and he said he has used non detergent oil in the past. He said not to use detergent oil as it will clean it out too much and then it will burn oil.

Does this make sense?

Should I use the detergent oil or not?

I don't know how much oil it burns now. The tractor will be used maybe 10 hours during the summer in the garden, and 15 hours in the winter moving snow.

Thanks

Personal Experience: '46 Ford flathead V-8. It was the sweetest running thing you ever heard, and didn't burn a drop of oil. I wanted to do the best thing in the world, so I changed to a good detergent oil. Within a few thousand miles it was smoking and using oil something fierce. Non-detergent oil lets the dirt and crud sink to the bottom of the pan, that's why it's good for compressors and electric motors. Detergent holds the junk in suspension so it gets drained each time, and will pick up all that undrained dirt (from using NON-D) and use it to wear out your engine. Yes, Non-D is light duty, but if it's worked all these years, I sure wouldn't change to detergent. (8N oil filters are bypass - the actual feed hole in the filter can is about 1/16 inch. All the rest of the oil is not filtered.)

Use detergent and don't worry.

The previous owner said he did an overhaul about twenty years ago, and the tractor has not been used much in those twenty years. I believe his father was the original owner, so it has probably been running non-detergent from the beginning.

Detergent oil is the only way to go - although you might drop the pan to clean the sludge out of it first then do a short run on the new oil & filter.

Some people think that all the dirt runs to the bottom of the engine and collects there while the rest of the engine stays clean – like magic. Deposits collect in every "low" point in the engine - especially bearings. Without detergenated oil to keep the dirt in suspension you have deposits through out you engine causing wear.

That and most nondetergentated oils are the lowest form of lube on earth, many have an SA rating while almost all other oils have an SL rating, including the "cheap" Wal-Mart oil.

Switch to the detergent oil. It will only help the engine. It will only burn oil if the rings are shot.

Sorry, ed1, gotta disagree with you. Detergent oil doesn't clean your engine, it just keeps dirt in suspension better so it can be filtered better. Today's detergent oil is far superior to the old non detergent stuff. I think the only thing I'd use non detergent for is as an additive (in small amounts)to diesel fuel.

Benny...Go do a search in the 9N, 2N, 8N discussion board here....This is a topic that's been discussed well over a hundred times, and the consensus is to use a good multi-weight non detergent oil. If your engine is already using a lot of oil, you can go to a heavier, straight weight non detergent product.

He is correct. Do Not use detergent oil in this tractor. Detergent oil will do exactly what it is intended to do - clean out the engine with the oil pump pumping all the dirt to your nice clean bearings. I've even heard that this crud can block oil passages.

Also, the crud can be downstream of the oil filter and you have to consider that if the oil filter becomes plugged the safety release in the filter will allow unfiltered oil to circulate.

Since I don't know the oil history I'm assuming it's been a long wile since overhaul's and it always used used non-detergant

An 8N does not have a full flow oil filter system. Meaning all the oil does not go through the filter, only some of it. So there is a direct path to the bearings from the pump.

With detergent oil it will carry the dirt direct to the bearings.

Gary
