1967 gas 2020 starting problems

Fellas,
My brother has the above mentioned tractor and is having troubles with starting aspect. I believe we have an electrical problem but I will tell you the symtoms and what we've done to it.
The tractor starts very slowly, by this I mean that when first started, it sounds more like a "one lunger" at start up- putt....putt....put..putt.putt,putt until she finally gets up to full rpm speed(about 30 seconds) once "up to speed" she never sputters, no lack of power, will run all day. She's almost impossible to start in the cold South Dakota winter, he has to plug the tank heater in, cover it with a tarp and run a knipco under it and then she might go. Last weekend we replaced the fuel solenoid and it was then that we noticed some possible electrical problems. The alternator has been replaced with a GM style with the internal regulator so the regulator wires are just cut off near the alternator,except for one wire which they have hooked up to the white wire of the alternator and that is going back to the switch. The problem we first had with this wiring was that once the tractor was started, you could not shut it off because that wire from the alternator was making the switch "hot" all of the time. We disconnected that and the tractor switch works fine. We haven't checked but I'm quite sure we will need to hook that wire up to some sort of electrical source to "excite" the alternator.
The switch is brand new.
The coil is new.
We have pointless ignition.
Checked to make sure the coil is wired so "-" goes to distributor, not reversed.
Champion plugs new.
Tractor was looked at last year at JD dealer for lack of power and the carb was "set" and tractor "tuned up"
Starter rebuilt last year
Battery I think is at most 2 yr's old
Plenty of cranking, starter isn't dragging
Gas pours out of elbow at carb.,no obstructions.

HELP. seems like a lack of a "hot" enough spark.
Bad plug wires? Bad new coil?
If wires are replaced, can we go to auto parts store and get any set of 4 cylinder wires?
Any suggestions are gladly welcomed!

I'm wondering if there is too much resistance going to the coil, could I take a jumper wire from the + battery post and run it directly to the + side of coil( unhooking wires there now so as not to create further problems) and try starting it? Could this procedure damage the coil in any way?
What else should I check? some say check compression???
Some say check timing? It never backfires or lacks power though..??
