Fellas,
My brother has the above mentioned tractor and is having troubles with starting aspect. I believe we have an electrical problem but I will tell you the symtoms and what we've done to it.
The tractor starts very slowly, by this I mean that when first started, it sounds more like a "one lunger" at start up- putt....putt....put..putt.putt,putt until she finally gets up to full rpm speed(about 30 seconds) once "up to speed" she never sputters, no lack of power, will run all day. She's almost impossible to start in the cold South Dakota winter, he has to plug the tank heater in, cover it with a tarp and run a knipco under it and then she might go. Last weekend we replaced the fuel solenoid and it was then that we noticed some possible electrical problems. The alternator has been replaced with a GM style with the internal regulator so the regulator wires are just cut off near the alternator, except for one wire which they have hooked up to the white wire of the alternator and that is going back to the switch. The problem we first had with this wiring was that once the tractor was started, you could not shut it off because that wire from the alternator was making the switch "hot" all of the time. We disconnected that and the tractor switch works fine. We haven't checked but I'm quite sure we will need to hook that wire up to some sort of electrical source to "excite" the alternator. The switch is brand new.
The coil is new.
We have pointless ignition.
Checked to make sure the coil is wired so "-" goes to distributor, not reversed.
Champion plugs new.
Tractor was looked at last year at JD dealer for lack of power and the carb was "set" and tractor "tuned up" Starter rebuilt last year
Battery I think is at most 2 yr's old
Plenty of cranking, starter isn't dragging
Gas pours out of elbow at carb.,no obstructions.

HELP. seems like a lack of a "hot" enough spark. Bad plug wires? Bad new coil? If wires are replaced, can we go to auto parts store and get any set of 4 cylinder wires?
Any suggestions are gladly welcomed!

I'm wondering if there is too much resistance going to the coil, could I take a jumper wire from the + battery post and run it directly to the + side of coil( unhooking wires there now so as not to create further problems) and try starting it? Could this procedure damage the coil in any way?
What else should I check? some say check compression???
Some say check timing? It never backfires or lacks power though..??

Could be the ing switch , the FIL's 4010 would not run right when it went bad they have a dioede in then to cut voltage back to 6 volts after they start and these go bad . .

first get the ground cable off of the sheet metal battery box and get it grounded to the starter bolts then do your compression tests---just had a diesel giving me trouble starting and all it needed was a good ground---get it spinin over good --sounds like she might be tired but check the valve settings next if compression is low

As Allan says and also you might try a new cap and rotor. Or it could also be flooding since gas should be dripping/running out the air intake area of the carb. If its flooding then its starting on one cylinder then as it runs the flloded cylinders slowly burn off the excess gas and start to fire.

Uncle,

Boy, the first thing I'd do is give that thing a compression test. Your description just "smacks" of 'a tired old engine'.

Hope not,

Allan

Thanks guys for all the info., the more I think about all of the suggestions, compression seems to make the most sense. I will try and do a compression check this weekend and let ya all know. THANKS

Well this is what I found out over the weekend. Compression is great, 145 lb.s across the board. I ohm tested the plug wires and found 2 that had an "open" reading. Quick changed them out with 2 out of a car ( I know not the right type but just a quick try) and it still started the same. I got 12+ volts at the coil when the switch turns on, the timing is good. We will replace the plugs, the wires, and run the ground to the starter bolt instead of the battery box. I did notice that the fuel filter on it is really small, I mean about the size of my pinky finger so we will replace that with a larger all metal one. I also noticed that the low idle setting on this tractor is at 12-1300 rpm's. The service manual says it should be at about 600 rpm's and the 2020 I have runs at about 600 rpms. Could this setting cause a starting problem? Any other ideas?
